Bushcraft and survival have become particularly synonymous in recent times and for those new to the subject, the distinctions and terminology can be confusing. Although a sound knowledge of bushcraft will equip the individual to cope with, or perhaps more importantly avoid a survival situation, this subject reaches far beyond the realms of survival, teaching how to read and utilise the natural world in a way that can only add to the outdoors experience.
This course opens the doorway to the world of Bushcraft and is aimed at introducing
the basic skills necessary to feel at home in the great outdoors. Becoming
proficient with these skills takes time, energy and practice and for this reason
we are not intent on giving you a hard time or making you suffer. It is our
firm belief that acquiring these skills to a proper level is impossible unless
the student is warm, comfortable and well fed. The final course content is
subject to the interests of the group but is likely to include most of the
following -
- Fire-making and management including fire-by-friction
- Improvised shelters
- Wild edible and medicinal plants
- Cordage
- Tool use and maintenance
- Simple campfire cookery
We provide a simple breakfast and evening meal each day,
but you will need to bring food for your own lunches.
Cooking utensils, pots and pans will be provided and there
is a large campfire, plus a small gas stove for back up.
Course Leader - Alex Travers ('Feathers') has
always been fascinated by the depth of knowledge of native
peoples around the world and has spent many years gathering
information and taking it into the purity of wilderness. He
has trained for ten years in the skills and philosophy of Tom
Brown Jnr's Tracker School. With a degree in the creative arts
Alex brings a lot of spontaneity to his teaching and shares
his passion for the skills of living with the earth and the
simple joys that they bring.
Location: This camp will take place at a
beautiful location in Devon.
