A truly wild and wonderful
blend of nature awareness, bushcraft and storytelling in a
friendly camp setting. The inspirational activities going on
during the week offer something for everyone. The whole community/outdoor
living experience is guaranteed to deepen the relationship
you and your family have to the natural world, forever.
The programme will be diverse and flexible, to accommodate
the wide-ranging needs of family groups. The kinds of things
we might expect to get up to include wildlife watching, bat-detecting
and bug hunting at night, wild-fire making and wild food gathering,
silent movement, scavenger hunts, woodcraft, listening to great
stories/music around the campfire and of course, to satisfy
the most primitive home-makers in us all, den-making!
This week is primarily a holiday for most people and so we
aim to strike a balance between doing and being, structure
and openness. The day will usually start with a circle-time
followed by a group activity session that lasts most of the
morning. The afternoon is for play, to join in on a more low-key
or craft activity or simply to spend time with your family/friends.
There will be time set aside for the adult activities particularly
those interested in acquainting themselves with the bushcraft
syllabus and our resident craft tutor, Bernard Graves, will
be offering traditional Blacksmithing sessions - a chance to
build an Iron Age pit forge and make a variety of iron treasures!
At night we will go for nocturnal walks, enjoy stories and
play games that help you feel at home in the dark.
All food and materials are included in the cost of the camp.
Tents are available for hire, if required, at £5-£10
per tent per night.
Event Leaders: The camp is led by two of
WildWiseís
most experienced outdoorsmen - Chris Salisbury and Chris
Holland with craft tutor Bernard
Graves.
Chris Salisbury - Educator, trainer and storyteller, Chris
founded WildWise after many years working as an education officer
for Devon Wildlife Trust. With a background in the theatre,
a training in therapy and a career in environmental education
he uses every creative means at his disposal to encourage people
to enjoy and value the natural world. He has worked with Ray
Mears and John Rhyder, amongst many others.
Chris Holland is an author, bushcraft
and nature awareness teacher, didgeridoo player, environmental
artist, outdoor play trainer and storyteller. He has been teaching,
instructing and mentoring in and out of schools for more than
ten years. His distinctive, pragmatic style of teaching exudes
a creative flair enjoyed by all.
Bernard Graves has been teaching crafts for over 20 years,
in a variety of community and educational settings. Most recently
he was a founding member of the Hiram Trust and has been influential
in the development of Ruskin Mill in Gloucestershire. Bernard
is one of the most exceptional teachers you are ever likely
to encounter, and here at WildWise, we reckon the nearest youíll
get to meeting Gandalf, such is his capacity for wizardry!
Location: This camp will take place at a
wild woodland on Dartmoor in
Devon.
"Thank you for letting my family live for a while as we would
always live in my dreams.
Days warmed by the summer sun in dappled woodland glades; good
friends and simple pleasures.
Evenings spent with magical stories, music and firelight woven
together with the woodland silhouettes and stars.
Nights spent watching the young ones doze in their forest dens,
happy dirty faces still visible in the glowing embers...
Thanks - you're all brilliant to keep doing what you are doing.
We need you and the world you create for us to visit..."
