Most young people have an interest in the
great outdoors. A surprising number have a real interest in
British wildlife. Fieldcraft has the potential to thrill and
excite young people and offers a golden opportunity to develop
their interest. For educators therefore, it’s a rich theme to exploit
in terms of acting upon a young person’s natural curiosity.
The Fieldcraft Skills course opens up this subject area in
very successful ways. Through dynamic, fun, practical exercises,
field study and activities that develop your sensory awareness,
you will learn how to begin decoding the sign language in the
natural environment in order to observe wildlife at close quarters.
Fieldcraft demands that you pay very close attention and expert
instruction will open your eyes to a whole new world of possibilities
by immersing your senses into the sights, smells and sounds
of wild Britain.
The Fieldcraft Skills course is an opportunity to sharpen
your awareness and learn the skills and techniques to bring
you to a level of intimacy with nature that you would not have
thought possible.
Basic skills will be taught in the context of providing a safe
but stimulating outdoor classroom.
This course is particularly suited to those who use a woodland
habitat to give children a meaningful experience of nature
eg. educators, teachers, forest school leaders, playworkers – in
fact anyone who is looking for ideas to engage groups with
the natural world.
The final course content is subject to the interests of the
group but is likely to include most of the following:
Sensory
Awareness
Understanding animal senses
Techniques to improve our senses
Observation Trails
Moving silently and unobserved
Recognising animal tracks and signs
Elementary Tracking
The course fee includes all equipment. The course will
be held in an exquisite woodland setting near Moretonhampstead
in Devon. Approx course times 9.30-4pm (confirmation on booking)
