Why Forest School?
The essence of Forest School is as old, as human beings themselves.
Learning in nature is something our cave-dwelling relatives practised
daily. For the overwhelming majority of human history, children
and adults alike learned important life lessons outdoors. Children
of the 21st century have the same innate longing for direct contact
with nature, but alarmingly fewer opportunities to do so. Forest
School is the answer for those parents and teachers who recognise
that learning outdoors is a deeply nurturing and stimulating experience
for their children. It also contributes directly to many areas
of the National Curriculum.
What is Forest School?
Forest School is essentially an outdoor classroom. Led by Qualified
Forest School leaders, it provides a place for nature-based learning
and the opportunity for regular structured visits to a woodland
site.
Each visit involves specific tasks and activities through which
children learn and develop a range of personal and social skills
that equip them for life. It also provides an opportunity for
them to experience and develop a relationship with the natural
world.
WildWise has set up a Forest School
on the Dartington Estate, Devon, providing a unique resource for
teachers. Please get in touch to discuss how your school may get
involved. |
