This is a workshop to introduce the principles
and practice of this most extraordinary skill - the ancient
technology of fire-making using the bow-drill method. Part
of the day will be spent harvesting and crafting your
own bow-drill set.
The course syllabus includes -
- looking at the principles
of fire-by-friction - an introduction to a variety of natural
tinders - an introduction to cutting tools
- the hand drill -
trying out different bow drill sets - harvesting the materials
to make your own set
- and learning how to use it!
Fire-lighting
using the bow-drill is an impressive skill that is not as difficult
as perhaps first perceived. It can be applied with dramatic
effect to certain client groups in the field.
