Timothy says ‘In all the wild places of the earth, animals
tell their own stories through voice, body language, markings,
and boundary displays. Humans do the same. In a wilderness
setting, personal and cultural stories are more accessible
to the willing searcher. In sessions I will guide people
to that access cave where they can sniff the spoor of their
own inner poetry. Through a few written poetry exercises and
spoken word displays, an individual will be able to catch a
whiff of the smoke of his inner ‘homefire.’ One
can learn to sing one’s own poetry like the yipping fox.
Even the tiny mouse, gnawing at the ropes of electronica, can
start a soulful wildfire. Poetry teaches such things.’
Timothy Young has been teaching poetry and folk stories in
schools, colleges, mentor programs, and adult wilderness retreats
for many years. He has been a performance poet for over twenty-five
years - on the streets, in the wilderness, in the classroom,
the library, and on the small and large stages. He has
three collections of poetry and two collaborative CDs of poetry
and music. His poem, A Thread of Sunlight, was included in
Scribner's The Best American Poetry of 1999. He lives in the
United States.
